Coming up this Saturday, March 13th, is the 38th Annual Buffalo Bayou Regatta taking place along a 15 mile stretch of Houstons Buffalo Bayou. This fun event is the largest canoe and kayak race in the entire state of Texas! The race begins at 9 a.m. at 7700 San Filipe and Voss and ends up at downtown’s Sesquicentennial Park. So even if you are not a sportsman (or sportswoman) you can still hang out for all the festivities and cheer on all the paddlers as they arrive and cross the finish line. There will be live music and food and drink concessions set up inside the park.

Needing a little air, a 2,000 pound bull named Hardball tried to stretch his legs and see some of Houston’s sights yesterday. Seizing the opportunity for freedom by knocking aside a two inch steel pin holding his pen closed, Hardball made a break for it and escaped from his quarters at the Houston Rodeo. Heading for the parking lot, he gave a couple of wranglers a run for their money that barely escaped with minor injuries. After being tazed (!) the bull was finally lassoed the old-fashioned way and led back to his pen.

Since 2005 Hardball has been ridden 24 times and his bucked off riders 79% of the time according to probullstats.com. Hardball is now back on rodeo rotation and is scheduled to run again on Wednesday night ridden by Tyler Thomson.

Go Hardball!

Today, the organization Houston Mod will be hosting an open house from 2pm-4pm for a unique property that is now available on the local real estate market. Built in 1957, this mid-century home designed by Zack Graham is ripe for restoration. Houston Mod is a great group of like-minded individuals that step in and try to save some of Houston’s important mid-century architecture. Without a landmarks commission or proper zoning, Houston has lost many great homes and buildings.

This particular home at 9222 Timberside was designed with entertaining in mind – huge open areas, lots of exposed brick, saltillo tiles, high ceilings, big fireplaces, and best of all…a walk in wet bar. The combination of the soaring glass windows with the warm woods, tiles, and brick, really give this place an excellent masculine environment for you hang all your Hamilton Shirts. Great mature trees and gardens surrounding this place make it an ideal and super stylish Houston residence. Show off to your friends how civic minded you are and how much great taste you have! This place is a total gem in the rough.

The house is listed at $339,000 and for more details you can check the listing here on the Houston Association of Realtors website.

The Oscar ceremony is coming up this Sunday and as much as this night is about movies, it is also all about fashion. While most of the attention goes to the ladies (for very good reason) I’d like to use this blog post as a small lesson in wearing black tie. It is really quite simple…men wear black tie for one reason – to be an anonymous background to show off your beautiful date. That’s it.

You may think you are as cool as Johnny Depp, or as creative as Mickey Rourke, or as stylish as the Duke of Windsor…but you’re not and never will be. Don’t dress like them – in fact, they shouldn’t even dress like them. Keep it simple – a basic black single breasted tux, a classic white straight collar pleat front shirt, a black bow tie that you tie for yourself, and you are done.

Remember, a badly tied bow tie is still a million times better that a pre-tied bow tie ALWAYS.

Take it from these guys…

Ok…dudes..this next recommendation may not be for the most masculine place on earth, but that’s something we can easily overlook. We guys like desserts just like anybody else and the super girly Sweet Lola Yogurt Bar is just too good to pass by.

Frozen yogurt here comes in really cool flavors – Ginger Agave, Lavender, Dark Chocolate, Lo’Nilla & some seasonal specials – and you get to fix it for yourself. So after you’ve self-served, you add on your extras, you get to pay by the ounce. The usual add-ons are all represented – fruit, nuts, berries, organic granola, and some unique specialties…and my two favorites – sea salt peanut butter croutons, and dark chocolate pomegranate. This frozen treat can be enjoyed relatively guilt-free in the fact that yogurt is supposedly good for you- but somehow, I’ll just never believe this. I do believe there are ‘bad’ desserts and even ‘badder’ desserts…and frozen yogurt just might be at the ‘less bad’ end of the spectrum.

So while the weathers getting a little warmer, its fun to sit outside, chow down and do some choice midtown people watching.

The March 2010 issue of Esquire has arrived and Hamilton Shirts has a mention that we are VERY proud of. The magazine has a feature called- The Esquire Collection -a list of the 25 items that would essential for a man to live a comfortable, well-dressed life and a Hamilton Shirt is included.

A wardrobe staple that no guy should be without, a simple white button-down from Hamilton will be quite different from any other that you’ve ever owned. The custom fit will be perfect and it will make you look and feel like a million bucks. It really makes quite a difference compared to a basic shirt that you can buy off the shelf elsewhere. You can use the EZ code provided in Esquire to help with the purchase, or you visit a Hamilton retailer or try out our very own online shirt builder here.
