The title might be a little misleading, but Garden & Gun is a magazine that you really must add to your stack of monthly reading materials. The brand new February issue is no exception, look for it next time you pass a newsstand. Sub-titled the “Soul of the South” the brand new issue features a fantastic article about Houston: where to eat, drink, sleep, shop (Hamilton Shirts!) and what to see & do – lots of cool stuff to check out in our hometown.

Bonus! A terrific article about Houston native, Lyle Lovett.

Pattern Play – Texas Monthly – Nov. 11

Texas Monthly takes a look at the various men’s & women’s prints in play for fall and features a fall 1883 shirt in their current November issue. Sadly, this style sold out so fast we never even had a chance to post it to the website. One of the very first new styles we introduced for the season, the shirt was exclusive to our Houston store and was snapped up by all our lucky Texan shoppers. If you are looking for something similar… the Shadow Shirt (a heavier weight) and the navy Buffalo Shadow Plaid (& burgundy version) both have a similar vibe.

This picture also reminds me a funny quote by Hamilton friend and menswear style-guru, Nick Wooster, who stated “camouflage pattern is to men what leopard spots are to women”. Very clever!!

The Homesick Texan Cookbook

Even though I don’t cook at home very often, I do enjoy flipping through beautiful cookbooks.

This brand new title written by the author of one of my favorite food blogs “Homesick Texan” is a hardback edition that will include 125 of the websites best recipes- and it’s sure to be fantastic. “The Homesick Texan Cookbook” by chef/writer/photographer Lisa Fain, was initially created online to share all her favorite foods that reminded her of her Texas roots after she moved away to New York City. From the books jacket:

“After a fruitless search for tastes of Texas in New York City, Fain took matters into her own hands. She headed into the kitchen to cook for her friends the Tex-Mex, the chili, and the country comfort dishes that reminded her of home. From cheese enchiladas drowning in chili gravy to chicken-fried steak served with cream gravy on the side, from warm bowls of chile con queso to big pots of fiery chili made without beans, Fain re-created the wonderful tastes of Texas she’d always enjoyed at potlucks, church suppers, and backyard barbecues back home.”

Coming out September 13th, but available now as a pre-order, this is one cookbook that no Texan (or non-Texan) kitchen should be without.

Mexican Martini

Last week The New York Times printed an interesting article about a cocktail that is unique to Austin, Texas – The Mexican Martini. The drink is sort of an oversize margarita in a martini glass that is served with speared olives and olive brine. The Times claims the drink was invented by a bartender at the Cedar Door during the late 70′s or early 80′s but is now popular in various interpretations all over the city. Another popular take on Austin’s signature drink is mixed with Sprite…a slightly different recipe from the NYT version:

Mexican Martini (attributed to Trudy’s)

2 oz Tequila like Herradura Silver
1 oz Cointreau
1-2 oz of Sprite
1 oz of orange juice
the juice of one lime

Shake all the ingredients and pour into a tall martini glass rimmed with salt. Serve with stuffed olives.

Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of out of range, the first solo-exhibition for Houston-based photographer Julie Soefer, on Friday, June 10, 2011, 6:30pm – 8:30pm. Her new exhibition of photography traverses the globe in an exploration of cultural landscapes deftly capturing nuanced moments with equal parts humor and romance. Drawing from her experiences both abroad and stateside, her photographs transcend geography and culture to create a compelling and meandering narrative. Ranging from the sublime and wistful to the inexplicable and striking, Soefer’s images draws her viewers into her international sojourn.

Julie Soefer is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She was mentored by pioneering photographer, Arnold Newman, who developed the environmental portrait. Julie served as the still photographer for the feature film Super Size Me, snapping the iconic movie-poster image of director Morgan Spurlock with a mouthful of french fries. Her work has been featured on the cover of Houston Modern Luxury magazine and she has been published by numerous national publications including The Financial Times, Texas Monthly and The Wall Street Journal. In addition to shooting ad campaigns for the likes of the Four Seasons, Texas Children’s Hospital and Elaine Turner, Julie was recently was recently chosen as a finalist in prestigious Hearst Corporation’s 8×10 Photography Biennial and was the winner of the 20th Annual Texas Photographic Society’s Member’s Only Show, juried by Clint Willour.
