Even though April Fools Day is over..there is still time for more shenanigans! Described as “an alley cat race through the city with unexpected twists” Lone Star Beer is sponsoring the April Fools Day Race 4 at the Sam Houston Park. Kicking off this Saturday at 3pm, the scavenger hunt style race costs $8 bucks to participate with an after party and film at the Moon Tower Inn. You’ll also need to have a bag and lock with you. What could be better than beer, bikes, and buffoonery! Drive Safely!
More information about the race on their twitter page: http://twitter.com/lonestrbikerace and also on facebook.

Stampede TV from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo brings us some interesting roping tips from this past seasons competition:
Tyson Durfey roping a calf in a pressed pink dress shirt is pretty great, no?

Coming up this Saturday, March 13th, is the 38th Annual Buffalo Bayou Regatta taking place along a 15 mile stretch of Houstons Buffalo Bayou. This fun event is the largest canoe and kayak race in the entire state of Texas! The race begins at 9 a.m. at 7700 San Filipe and Voss and ends up at downtown’s Sesquicentennial Park. So even if you are not a sportsman (or sportswoman) you can still hang out for all the festivities and cheer on all the paddlers as they arrive and cross the finish line. There will be live music and food and drink concessions set up inside the park.
If you are thinking that might you want to participate in the race – be sure and register at the Regattas website. There you can get all the details for the event, including where to rent local canoes and kayaks.

Congratulations to Houstons Chad Hedrick who will end his Olympic career with a total of FIVE medals! Chad will match the record of Eric Heiden, who won five gold medals at the 1980 Winter Olympics, for the most medals won by any U.S. men’s speedskater. Awesome!

Kind of like a whirling-dervish style hockey game, The Houston Roller Derby is a rowdy, raucous sport that is just as much fun, if not more, to watch. League matches take place about once a month at the Kicks Indoor Soccer & Gym facility at 611 Shepherd Drive.
At Kicks you can check out the finest players from the all star travel team ‘The Hard Knocks’ (team slogan is Texas Style Ass Whoopin!) where the leagues top skaters join forcers to compete at national level WFTDA tournaments around the country. Some of the other teams here in Houston are ‘The Bayou City Bosses’, ‘Psych Ward Sirens’, ‘The Burlesque Brawlers’, and the recreational league ‘The Machete Betties’.
My favorite part of Roller Derby besides the game itself, are the great player monikers that the girls give themselves. Some of the best examples of names from the Houston league are Carmen Geddit, Jeckyl & Heidi, Tex Offender, Miss Lead, Dailey Beatings, Goldie Bloxx, and probably my favorite..Scarlet O’Hurtya.
You can order tickets for future games online HERE and get more information like upcoming dates, charity events, and special appearances. They even have some pretty cool merch for sale like Houston Roller Derby t-shirts, stickers, and patches.

Looking forward to this new fishing TV series called Pirates of the Flats which is going to air on ESPN2 this month (looks like on Sunday mornings). The show stars Tom Brokaw, Michael Keaton, Thomas McGuane, Yvon Chouinard, Lefty Kreh, and Val Atkinson as they fish for bonefish in the Bahamas.

Have some time off? Looking for something to do with the kids? I highly recommend going skating at The Ice at Discovery Green. Open everyday now through Martin Luther King Day, you can skate among the downtown skyline on what is normally the model boat basin. The 22 degree water used for the rink is created using water from Kinder Lake that is frozen by using renewable energy.
The rink is open everyday from 4pm til 10pm, 11am til 11pm on weekends & school holidays, and 11am til 8pm on Sundays. The admission price of $10 includes tax and your skate rentals. While you are in the park be sure and check out the holiday art exhibits, David Graeve’s illuminated globes and artist Andy Mann’s video tree.

Kelly Hamilton recently forwarded this YouTube clip to me of outspoken Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach. Coach Leach is very candid in answering a freshman’s questions about taking a girl out on a first date.
I think I’ll just let Coach Leach speak for himself:
