What’s sure to be the Houston show of the year, hometown hero Win Butler returns to the Woodlands with his GRAMMY WINNING band Arcade Fire. The show is taking place on May 4th at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, and it looks to be pretty sold out.

Also appearing, the Texas bandExplosions in the Sky, where they will be playing their “cathartic mini-symphonies” to kick things off. If you are not familiar with the name, you’ll definitely know their sound from the film score to Friday Night Lights that they composed.

Brent Amaker & the Rodeo

Monday, December 20, 2010

Are you a member of the B.A.R. Brigade? ”Dressed in black from head-to-toe, the Rodeo offers up original country music classics a la Johnny Cash but delivered in the spirit of Devo, David Bowie and many others who still believe the live show should be, well a show.”

I’m really digging their country & western cover of Kraftwerk’s ‘Pocket Calculator‘. For real.

Brent Amaker & the Rodeo

Here is the latest video with some very strange DEVO references, that I’m sure make sense to someone. According to the bands website ‘whisky baptisms’ often take place during their live shows with a burlesque dancer named Bunny Monroe. Now that I’d like to see!

Latin Music USA

Monday, October 4, 2010

Starting last night on PBS, the new documentary series called Latin Music USA began its four episode run. The first hour was really great – I was so glad I tuned in. Check your local TV guide, first run episodes are on Sunday nights at 10, but PBS specials tend to get repeated. You can even watch it again online. After viewing last nights episode, it made me wish that this was the kind of American history that we learned in school!

From amazing footage of Machito & His Afro-Cuban Boys:

The history of Dizzy Gillespie working with the Cuban percussionist Chano:

The incredible mambo dancing of Millie Donay & Cuban Pete at New York’s Palladium nightclub:

All the way to Carlos Santana talking about his legendary debut at Woodstock while tripping on LSD:

Be sure and try to catch it…don’t miss it!

Think Houston is all cowboys and oilmen? Nope! We have drunken drug-fueled robot orgies just like any other city.

Check out this video using the LCD Soundsystem song ‘Home‘ made by Houston’s art collaborative Funwunce Supergroup and RGD Films, shot in and around the city of Houston.

Press Play – September Vogue

Saturday, September 4, 2010

Normally when your past comes back to haunt you, it’s time to run for cover. This blast from the past literally makes us want to dance in the street!

While flipping through the bible of (ladies) fashion – September Vogue – we stumbled across this terrific photo from our recent past. A couple years ago, Justin Timberlake was shot for a special supplement to Vogue called Fashion Rocks. We made J.T. a bespoke tuxedo shirt from our Hamilton Shirts line, and we were lucky enough to have it appear. To illustrate the upcoming Fashion’s Night Out, another photo from the same shoot was used..and this one is even better!

Around here we like to think that even through our very small contribution, we are doing what we can to help bring Sexyback. We can provide the great fitting shirt, the rest is up to you…dance moves not included.

Gershwin/Wilson

Saturday, August 28, 2010

While working on the upcoming 1883 Spring 11 collection, I became very inspired by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. I was listening to his music and studying pictures of his style from the 60′s, and getting many inspirational ideas. In a funny coincidence, after explaining the idea to David and Kelly Hamilton, they revealed that their dad loved the Beach Boys and that they even had a pet cat growing up that was named in honor of Brian Wilson.

Brian Wilson is suddenly back again, and he’s arrived with a very surprising project. A new cd has been released (on 8/17) that matches up the unexpected and very strange pairing of Brian Wilson with George & Ira Gershwin – and the idea turns out to be entirely successful. The musical genius of Brian Wilson re-imagines the Gershwin songbook. ‘S Wonderful!

It’s Lee Fields World

Friday, August 13, 2010

Nicknamed the “Soul Survivor” the veteran R&B singer – Lee Fields - may sound a little bit like the past, but he definitely has his wingtips firmly planted in the future. Maintaining the great traditions of soul music while experimenting with modern sounds, Lee Fields is an all American classic. His voice may remind music fans of great singers like Otis Redding and James Brown, but his latest album “My World” should attract a brand new generation of listeners. I recently had the chance to see Lee Fields perform live along with the incomparable Sharon Jones...and let me tell you it was a show I’ll never forget. He is one cool cat.

There really hasn’t been a full-fledged musical summer anthem for the summer of 2010…so I hereby nominate the Lee Fields tune “Ladies“.

Fun Fun Fun Fest

Thursday, August 5, 2010

The new lineup for Austin’s 5th Annual FUN FUN FUN Fest taking place in Waterloo Park has just been released and…GET READY. You could really just stop at just one ‘Fun’…but it actually will take THREE ‘Fun’s’ to accurately describe this list. Are you sitting down?

This years lineup will include: MGMT, DEVO, Mastodon, Bad Religion, Slick Rick, RJD2, A-Trak, GWAR, The Hold Steady, The Dirty ProjectorsWEIRD AL YANKOVIC and MORE…

The Fun Fun Fun Festival was created to include “what is bubbling from the underground, what sounds great, and what is making an impact, regardless of what Pollstar or the mainstream media said was cool.” I’ll say. What had once been a two day festival has now been enlarged to three – more days, more bands, more ultimate face-melting music awesomeness!

Tickets are on sale now HERE for November 5, 6, 7.

** also while in Austin – be sure and check out the mens store called Stag – tons of cools stuff for sale, including a GREAT selection of our 1883 shirts! **
