SXSW – Breakfast Edition
Thursday, March 11, 2010
SXSW starts up tomorrow and already there have been tons of articles written about the festival and all the new bands that will be appearing. So instead of yet another post about the bands to check out…I figured I’d write something a little closer to my heart – Austin’s Famous Breakfasts. Yesterday the N.Y. Times had a great article about whether the breakfast taco could trace its roots back to Austin, and just how the early morning staple came to exist. It seems the breakfast taco was invented in the 70′s as a local fast food answer to the Egg McMuffin.
The article mentions some of the best places to hit if you happen to find yourself in Austin:
- Porfirio’sa – 1512 Holly Street (at Comal Street)
- Tacodeli – 1500 Spyglass Drive (at Barton Skyway)
- Tamale House – 5003 Airport Blvd (at East 50th Street)
- Taqueria La Flor – 4901 South First Street (at Heartwood Drive)
- Torchy’s Tacos – 1311 South First Street (at Elizabeth Street) with multiple locations around Austin
Have a favorite taco place that’s not mentioned here that you’d like to share? Let us know!
** A reader Ben writes in about Juan in a Million, 2300 Cesar Chavez Street (at Mildred St.) Excellent! **

Can’t believe you left off Juan In A Million. Hard to say what’s better; the breakfast tacos or the giant glasses of iced tea that they bring you.
I’m going to be in Austin on Saturday. Are you heading up for SXSW? Send me an email.
