Distinguished Stamps

Last week I needed to do something that I haven’t had to do for months. I needed to send a letter by mail. Its been such a long time that I even had to google how much a regular stamp actually costs. In my quest for postage I came across these great stamps that were just issued by the USPS on February 4th. A series of Distinguished Sailors Stamps has been introduced that represent “a tradition of excellence in the U.S. Navy that began with the authorization for two warships by the Continental Congress on October 13, 1775.”

The seafarers that were chosen represent four sailors that served with bravery and distinction during the 20th century. Featured on the stamps are Admiral William Sowden Sims who commanded during WWI, Admiral Arleigh Burke who commanded during WWII and the Korean War, John C. McCloy a sailor who is one of only 19 individuals to receive the Medal of Honor twice, and Doris (Dorie) Miller who was a cook that was the very first African American (and a Texan!) to be award the Navy Cross for bravery during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

You can order these great stamps direct from the United States Postal Service here. So even if you don’t have anything to mail, wouldn’t you want these awesome stamps on hand just in case?
