Dia de los Muertos

Thursday, October 22, 2009

This is a very big year for the Lawndale Art Center. Not only is the museum celebrating their 30th Anniversary of showing works by local Houston artists, they are also hosting the 22nd Annual Dia de los Muertos exhibition. Every year for over 20 years, Lawndale hosts a non-juried show of local artworks that celebrates the Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead. With an open call to all artists, anyone is welcome to show their work to a very receptive crowd in this contemporary museum setting. Along with the exhibition, the museum will also be hosting additional programming that teaches and encourages interest in Mexican-American heritage here in our area. According to the Lawndale website, this exhibition “promotes cultural awareness of Mexican folk art practices associated with this celebration of family, life, and community”.

Dia de os Muertos 2009

Tomorrow night, Friday, October 23rd the museum will present The Dia de los Muertos Gala and Retablo Silent Auction starting at 7pm (6pm for artists, sponsors, and museum members). Entry to the Gala is $40 ($30 for members- so join up!) tickets available at the door by calling 713.528.5858 or by emailing askus@lawndaleartcenter.org. There will be a silent auction of over 300 works by Texas artists, and a separate special exhibition of works contributed by local area school children. This sounds like a great opportunity to score some fantastic art and also to enjoy some food and drinks provided by a lot of local bars and restaurants.
