A Texas version of a national monument, Mount Rush Hour (as it is affectionately known) is the artist David Adickes take on the classic South Dakota landmark. Located in the First Ward area where I-10 & I-45 intersect, the Presidential Heads are a welcome diversion to just sitting and rotting in traffic at this notorious bottleneck. Giant busts of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Sam Houston, and Stephen Austin give morning commuters something to look at as they inch downtown arriving from the northwest suburbs.
The controversial artist David Adickes, is best known for his large scale sculptures, has created many memorable Texas landmarks. There is The Virtuoso, a 36 foot cello player that emits music 24 hours a day downtown, the Big Sam Houston located in Huntsville, and “The Winds of Change” and 8 foot bronze of former President George Bush located at the George Bush International Airport. Things keep looking up for Mr. Adickes, with a new Barack Obama head on tour, gigantic Beatles figures popping up, it seems as though nothing can keep this 82 year old Houston artist down.
