Project Row Houses
Tuesday, August 18, 2009
Project Row Houses is a nonprofit arts organization founded in 1993 by artist Rick Lowe, and was established by African-American artists and local community activists to create a positive presence in Houston’s Northern Third Ward community. Project Row Houses believes that “art, and the community it creates, can be the foundation for revitalizing depressed inner-city neighborhoods”. Besides providing a place for the artists to reside and work, the houses feature constantly changing art installations.
Right now they are featuring The 2009 Summer Studio Artists Open House. For the period of one month, you can stop in and visit with the current artists in residence. Seven local art students are chosen for a six week residency to create and display their work. This residency includes “opportunities to engage within the Third Ward Community, mentorship from established Houston-based artists and a culmination with this month long exhibition”.
